Amalfi Coast and Naples: Tours and Itineraries

Cliffside villages, Pompeii and the energy of Naples along the Tyrrhenian shore.

Why travel to Amalfi Coast & Naples

Naples, in Italy's Campania region, is one of the most alive cities in Europe, and the Amalfi Coast starts an hour south of it, where Positano, Amalfi and Ravello drop in terraces towards the sea along a road of continuous hairpins.

Around them lie Pompeii and Herculaneum under Vesuvius, the island of Capri and the Royal Palace of Caserta, all within short transfers or a ferry crossing of each other. Sorrento, on its own cliff across the bay, is the base most Amalfi Coast tours use, and the departure point for boats to Capri.

It is also where Italian food is at its most recognisable: pizza in Naples, lemons and seafood on the coast, buffalo mozzarella from the plain inland. Our Amalfi Coast tours can be joined on their own or reached from Rome as part of a longer journey south; we drive the coast road outside peak hours and use ferries wherever they are faster.

What to see in Amalfi Coast & Naples

  • Positano seen from the sea at sunset

    Positano

Pastel houses stacked above a pebble beach, reached by stepped lanes rather than roads. It is the image most travellers have of the coast, and the best base for boat trips along it.

  • The town of Amalfi seen from the sea

    Amalfi and Ravello

Amalfi keeps the cathedral and the paper mills of the old maritime republic; Ravello sits high above it, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone and a summer music festival.

  • A paved street in Pompeii with Vesuvius behind

    Pompeii

The Roman town buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, with paved streets, houses, frescoes and bakeries still in place. A guided visit of two to three hours covers the essentials without exhausting the site.

  • The coastline of Capri

    Capri

A limestone island of cliffs and sea caves, reached by ferry from Naples or Sorrento. Beyond the Piazzetta there are the Faraglioni, Anacapri and the chairlift to Monte Solaro.

Amalfi Coast & Naples: frequently asked questions

Where should I stay on the Amalfi Coast?
Sorrento is the most practical base: it has the widest choice of hotels and direct ferries to Capri, with Pompeii and the coast road within easy reach. Positano and Amalfi are more scenic but harder to reach by coach.
Is Capri worth a day trip?
Yes. The ferry from Sorrento takes around 25 minutes, and a day allows the Piazzetta, the Gardens of Augustus and a boat trip round the island.
How long does a visit to Pompeii take?
About two hours with a local guide, covering the forum, the baths, the houses and the theatre area. Bring water and a hat: there is very little shade.
When is the best time to travel?
April to June and September to October. The coast road is slow and busy in high summer, and some hotels close between November and March.
