Hiking in Sicily

Etna, the Aeolian Islands and coastal paths between sea and volcanoes.

About hiking in Sicily

Sicily hiking tours offer a kind of walking found nowhere else in Italy: black lava fields on Etna, crater rims on the Aeolian Islands, and coastal paths that drop straight to the sea.

Walking days are led by local guides who know the volcanic terrain and the conditions, and an Etna tour is planned on the morning itself according to the activity of the summit. Trails are combined with the towns and archaeological sites nearby, from Taormina to the Alcantara gorges.

Spring and autumn are the main seasons for hiking in Sicily, when temperatures stay comfortable on exposed ground and the lava fields are walkable through the middle of the day.

Walking on Etna

Europe's highest active volcano is walked from the Sapienza refuge and from the quieter northern side, across black lava fields, old craters and pine woods. Local volcano guides set the route on the day, according to the activity of the summit and the wind.

Taormina and the coast

Between walking days the coast gives an easier pace: the Greek theatre of Taormina looking towards Etna, the paths above Castelmola and the bays below the town. It is the natural base for a group combining trails with the sea.

Hiking in Sicily: frequently asked questions

How difficult is hiking on Etna?
Moderate. Walks follow marked routes on volcanic ground at altitude, usually three to four hours, with the exact route set by the authorities according to the volcano's activity.
When is the best season for hiking in Sicily?
Spring and autumn. April, May, October and early November give mild temperatures; midsummer is too hot for full walking days at low altitude.
What should I bring?
Boots with a firm sole for volcanic rock, sun protection, a windproof layer for the altitude on Etna and at least two litres of water a day.
Are the Aeolian Islands part of the walking?
Yes, with crossings by hydrofoil from Milazzo and walks on Lipari, Vulcano or Stromboli depending on conditions.
