Cycling in Tuscany

Chianti hills, medieval towns and tastings, at the pace of a bicycle.

About cycling and wine in Tuscany

Tuscany bike tours ride well because the country roads connect Florence, Siena and the hill towns through vineyards, olive groves and cypress lines, with climbs that are long rather than steep, and white gravel strade bianche where the traffic disappears altogether.

Our cycling tours in Tuscany combine riding days with visits to the art cities and with tastings at the estates along the route, on e-bikes and with a support van every day.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for cycling in Tuscany, with mild temperatures and long light in the late afternoon.

Country road between Tuscan vineyards

The Chianti roads

Between Florence and Siena the roads climb and drop through vineyards and olive groves, past Greve, Radda and Castellina. Gradients are long rather than sharp, and estates along the way open for a tasting at the end of a riding morning.

The Val d'Orcia

South of Siena the landscape opens into wide clay hills, cypress lines and white gravel roads. Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano sit within a short ride of each other, which makes this the most rewarding area of Tuscany for a full day in the saddle.

Cycling in Tuscany: frequently asked questions

Is Tuscany too hilly for cycling?
Not on an e-bike. The Chianti hills roll rather than climb steeply, and the motor turns the long rises between Florence and Siena into an easy day.
Do we ride on the strade bianche?
Yes, in part. The white gravel roads are firm and well maintained, and the tyres fitted to our bikes handle them comfortably.
Are wine tastings part of the cycling days?
Yes. Cellar visits are booked for our group and timed so that tastings come at the end of the riding, not in the middle of it.
When is the best time to cycle in Tuscany?
April to June and September to October. September adds the grape harvest to the ride.
